Remembering Joan Morris

by Dena Wilson | Jan 26, 2016
She once said, “Volunteer work is an opportunity, not just a good deed. We owe it to the world and those who are less privileged than we are.”

As a staunch advocate for people with intellectual disabilities, Simcoe Community Services is blessed to have experienced firsthand that tremendous compassion and sense of giving from Joan Morris. For twelve years, she served as past President and volunteer board member of what was then The Barrie and District Association for People with Special Needs, and was honoured in 1989 by the Ministry of Community and Social Services as the Central Region Volunteer Award Recipient. She also served as Regional Director of the Simcoe County Council of the Ontario Association For Community Living.

“The benefit we make in another’s life can be of equal value to our own,” she once said. “If you feel good about helping someone to learn to read, to get out to a show, to learn to live on his or her own, imagine how good he or she feels about being helped.”

Joan was a guidance counsellor at Barrie North Collegiate, before moving in 1967 a little further down Grove Street to become the first Head of Eastview Secondary School’s Guidance Department. It’s safe to say that over the years, Joan influenced many a career choice in Barrie.

Thank you Joan for touching so many lives.

Joan Morris passed away peacefully on January 14th, 2016
