Family Relief

Family Relief is designed to assist families to care for a family member with a disability by creating greater opportunities for all family members to live actively and participate in community activities and allowing parents/guardians time for themselves.  Simcoe Community Services is a member of a provincial network of respite providers through Respiteservices.com and offers a variety of respite options for families.

Families may connect with self-employed, screened CHAPs (Community Helpers for Active Participation) who may provide the following services:

  • Host-home respite which occurs in the CHAP’s home, and the person participates in the family life of the CHAP;
  • Hourly respite which provides relief in the person’s home as well as respite outside the person’s home, e.g., support at recreation programs, day camps, involvement in community activities, etc.;
  • Daily respite which is considered to be any amount of time over 8 hours, and is available both in-home and host home.

Residential Respite is available through the agency’s Accommodation Services, for children and adults who require physical and/or medical support and for adults with a developmental disability who may or may not require physical support.

Respite may also be provided in the form of registration for qualified recreation programs and summer camps.

Family Relief funding may be available to the families of children and adults who live at home and have been identified as having a developmental delay, and children who have a physical disability.

Families of children with disabilities may apply for funding through the respiteservices.com website at www.respiteservices.com.  Families of adults with a developmental disability must apply for funding through the Developmental Services Office (DSO).  Families of both children and adults may use the website to access screened and trained CHAPs.    Individuals who are interested in providing care for adults and children with disabilities may also register on the respiteservices.com website.

Family Relief funding is available to families living in Barrie, Bradford and the surrounding townships.
